Mathieu Wolniewicz (ma mi) develops a body of engraved and painted figural works on reflective surfaces, where perception results from the interaction between material inscription, the optical phenomenon of reflection, and conditions of viewing.

Within this device, the figure remains both recognizable and unstable: it forms and dissolves according to light, the viewer’s movement, and the superposition of the engraved surface and its reflection. In darkness, artificial light can extend this process of apparition beyond the frame of the mirror, projecting an enlarged luminous extension of the figure into the surrounding space.

The experience of the image is thus that of a fluctuating presence, in which the figure remains continuously in the process of appearing.

Mathieu Wolniewicz (ma mi) développe un ensemble de figures gravées et peintes sur des surfaces réfléchissantes, où la perception résulte de l’interaction entre inscription matérielle, phénomène optique du reflet et conditions de vision.

Dans ce dispositif, la figure reste à la fois reconnaissable et instable : elle se forme et se défait selon la lumière, le déplacement du spectateur et la superposition entre la surface gravée et son reflet. Dans l’obscurité, une lumière artificielle peut prolonger ce processus d’apparition au-delà du cadre du miroir, projetant une extension lumineuse agrandie de la figure dans l’espace environnant.

L’expérience de l’image relève ainsi d’une présence fluctuante, où la figure demeure continuellement en cours d’apparition.
